Nationwide Cash Card+ in Jersey?

I have a basic bank account with Nationwide, because of my credit history they will only let me have a Cash Card Plus account. Problem is I'm going to Jersey (channel islands) for a holiday soon and despite asking Nationwide twice they cannot tell me if my bank card will work in Jersey! They have told me that Cash Card Plus will not work abroad to withdraw cash from a ATM but they are not sure if 'Jersey' is abroad! They have advised me to take CASH and to "do some investigation yourself!!" The card has a VISA sign on it. Can you help. Thanks

  • I know for postage & travel insurance etc Jersey is classed as the UK so I am guessing it should work. Even if the ATM's dont work, I would suspect you could still draw out from any post office without a problem.

You can't rely on one card abroad. It can be lost, stolen, swallowed by an ATM etc. You always need either a backup card or cash.

Highly unlikely. The UK post office doesn't operate in Jersey. It has its own post office, -Jersey Post.

Nationwide's website says you can't use ATMs "outside the UK" and Jersey is not part of the UK, so I'd say that you can't use your card in Jersey.

The Channel Islands & IOM are part of the UK banking system so aren't considered to be abroad from a banking perspective.

You'll be able to use any LINK machine there and the card as you would with any UK based retailer.

Jersey uses the LINK atm system, so it will work fine.

The Channel Islands are not part of the UK banking system and most UK banks which do business there do so through an ex-pat/international off-shoot.

Jersey has its own bank compensation scheme which is completely separate from the UK scheme:

The fact that LINK has ATMs in Jersey is a red herring, and doesn't necessarily mean that the OP will be able to use them if the Nationwide has banned use "outside the UK". If you use the LINK ATM finder you'll find that LINK also has ATMs in France, but I can't see the OP being able to use those ATMs!

The only reason it doesn't work out of the UK is because the card hasn't been added onto the Plus network, it is on the Link network. French Link ATMs I don't fully understand who does the conversion, Link or Visa.

The crown dependencies are part of the UK banking system. They use the LINK ATM network, Faster Payments, BACS, CHAPS and UK sort codes etc.

The compensation scheme isn't relevant to the OP.

When I used my cards in Jersey and the IOM the statements all said the retailer, place name and country code 'GB' which I found a bit odd and the ATMs were the same as the UK bar the local notes.

I'm watching this with interest, me and my mate are going to Jersey at some point in the next few months to watch our rugby team play and I have an online card with RBS, presumably all will be ok with that as I don't do cash...
