When I was a student (a few years back admittedly...) Barclaycard were constantly chasing students to take out credit cards, often with some sort of promotional offer (free HMV voucher, railcard, etc...).

If there is a bank with a branch in your Student Union you could try them but as others have suggested your own bank would be a good starting point.

  • An overdraft appears on your credit record - so having a student overdraft will do good in building up a record!

    Cheers all for the responses.

Like mentioned, the Santander 123 credit card wouldn't be as beneficial to me as I only have the one direct debit and wouldn't make enough cash back to cancel out, or profit from, the incurring fee.

I will have a look around Barcleys though, see if there's anything decent on offer there!

How much are you planning on spending for you to not be able to earn £24 back as surely food shop alone would cover the fee?

What does having one direct debit have to do with the 123 credit card?

If you don't want to risk getting rejected, I'd still suggest that you apply to the bank. Santander has another credit card (The Santander Credit Card) that doesn't charge any annual fee.

Santander gave me 123 current account and credit card based on my history with the bank when the only thing I had with Santander was cash ISA for one year. I didn't even ask for one, but the bank staff offered me when I was in the branch, saying that I had been pre-approved. So I went ahead with application and was accepted for both. Then I was a "homemaker" and/or a doctoral "student" which I don't think are the most prized categories in the banking terms.

I applied for Barclays Initial three years ago, and was rejected. I appealed, and I then received a call from a lady who explained to me that they cannot offer me one because I am a student and do not have enough income. I can think of other reasons why I wasn't accepted then, but that is specifically what the lady said to me.
