What's the best place to park for a visit to the University? e.g. should I park somewhere further out and get the tram in?

You cant get the tram down Oxford Road but there are a huge number of buses that travel down it from the City Centre, grab virtually any bus from the bus stop just past the palace theatre. Just ask the driver to confirm but pretty sure they all do.
If you want to park your car and it's easy enough to be honest, I have driven there plenty of times, I would recommend the NCP next to the aquatics centre https://www.ncp.co.uk/car-park?cpid=901068&name=Aquatic%20Centre0
