So, quite a bit done on 'phase 2' between Easter and this BH.

As we left it last autumn, it was OK but I felt improvements could be made to the planting layout, the beds were too narrow, there wasn't enough variation in height.

New edge marked out, note the bay trees still in winter fleeces

The lowest point! I was close to "giving up", battling in the mud to lay drainage pipes, ground pressure brings water to surface.

Easter, and the last drainage pipe is going in. Trampling about has destroyed the lawn, but it was always due for re-turfing due the the weeds. Electric tiller helps to incorporate 1 tonne of sand/topsoil.

Layered planting in large pot pays off and brings some cheerful colour -

Welcome assistance, "lawn" has gone and 6cm of grit laid

That look's better! Once the cross-beam on the pergola is fitted, it'll be even better when the rear fence starts to get covered by the climbers (yep, that's a Russian Vine on the fence behind the lawn man )

Looking like a proper garden, the days of digging in the mud are (almost) forgotten. This side of pergola has evergreen clematis and (just visible as a few sticks) the rose Mme Alfred Carrière

Getting fancy now ;)...tulips and just visible at back the white starburst flowers of magnolia stelata

I haven't been keeping a ledger, but I reckon it'll have cost about £1,750 to get to this point, not counting my time of course.

I have spoken, it looks Super.

I love your combinations of tulip colours, the two dark plummy colours, lifted by the white are particularly lovely I think.
