Problems accessing internet.

Options
Hi Folks,

I have just been given an acer laptop to carry out tasks for a club I am a member of. There appears to be a problem with accessing the internet on the laptop for some reason. I have a wireless router, however when I click on the wireless network connection icon and click refresh network lists I get the following message:-
"Windows cannot configure the wireless connection.

If you have enabled another program to manage this wireless connection, use that software.

If you want Windows to configure this wireless connection, start the Wireless Zero Configuration (WZC) service. For information about starting the WZC service, see 871122 in the Microsoft Knowledge Base on the microsoft.com Web site"

I went to the website and did what it said but the problem remains.

I also tried connecting the laptop to my modem using the internet cable and I still could not access the internet.

Anyone got any ideas what I can do??

So you have connected it to the router with an ethernet cable, and it doesn't work?

I would concentrate on getting it working wired before tackling the wireless connection. When you say 'internet cable' do you mean an Ethernet cable? Is the modem a USB modem or is it the router (wireless router modem) referred to earlier in your post? And does it have Ethernet ports?

If so, connect laptop to wireless router using an Ethernet cable, then Control Panel - Internet Options - Connections tab - Setup. Next steps are Connect to the Internet, Set up manually, Connect use b/band connection that is always on. Fire up Internet Explorer and see if it sees the web.
  • Yes, Ethernet cable. When I take this out the wireless router and connect it directly to the laptop, when I hover over the LAN icon it says speeb 100mbps, Status: little or no connectivity. I went to support and clicked repair and it would appear the problem is in the IP address but it failed to repair it.

It all work fine with this laptop.

    try start, run
    cmd
    ipconfig /release
    ipconfig /renew
    after connecting the ethernet cable

Let's take the wireless part, which might be confusing things, out of the equation. Go into Control Panel - Network Connections and disable the wireless network connection. Then with the laptop connected to the router with Ethernet cable, follow Albert's instructions in post 5 again. If no joy, right-click Local Area Connection and click Repair.

Do you have a separate modem and wireless router, or is it a combined wireless router modem? Your wording suggests the former, but just want to make sure. Does the Acer laptop have built-in wireless or does it use a USB or PC card wireless adapter? Post makes and models of all equipment. Who is your ISP?

    Hi folks, I'm back !!

A family friend fixed the problem above somehow (site was getting fixed when I was going to let you know).

Anyway, It all seemed to be working fine however it has all gone a bit crazy again!!

Basically I have two laptops which I want to be able to use the internet with. This one only works when the ethernet cable is connected but I cant get it to access through wireless router and it just says "no wireless networks were found in range".

The other laptop says it is connected to the wireless network, but it doesn't connect when i try and says "cannot sind server or DNS Erros"

    Any tips?

Ps: Trying to avoid getting friend back as it took him a few hours to fix last time.
