Honeymoon hotel upgrade

Hi everyone

One of my friends got married recently and I will be following suit in September.

We're going away for a week afterwards to Alicante and my friend suggested that we inform the hotel that it's our honeymoon to see if they upgrade us to a higher spec room.

I didn't realise people still did this! Does anyone have any tips? Do we message them beforehand and tell them it's our honeymoon so that they're aware or do we just wait until we turn up and see if anything is available on the day?

go with no expectations. Much will depend on the hotel but the norm would be to upgrade yourself at a cost if a higher spec room is important

It's not important at all, the place we're going is lovely and all the rooms look quite swish... we just fancied being a bit cheeky to see if we get a nicer view or closer to the pool or something.

Get a friend/parent to call the hotel up and ask and pay for a bottle of champagne and some flowers to be left in your room as it's your honeymoon. This gives the hotel the heads up without you looking like you're a cheap beggar.

    I've been Money Tipped!
Admittedly it was 14 years ago (tomorrow :D ) but the agent put on our holiday booking that it was our honeymoon and requested a complimentary upgrade for us.

We got one when we checked in - nothing said by us, the reception explained that they had a higher grade room available which they'd love for us to use.

Jacuzzi on the balcony. Flowers, champagne, fruit bowl and cake awaiting us in our room.

I felt spoilt at the age of 22 - never known anything like it!

We got upgraded for our honeymoon as well (22 years ago).
We had just scraped together enough for a week at a hotel on the edge of Lake Geneva but we could only afford a room at the back of the hotel, facing the mountains. Our travel agent noted on the booking that it was our honeymoon and when we arrived we were shown to a Lake View room with a balcony, champagne, chocolates and a fruit basket!

I think paddyrg's suggestion is a good one - it would probably work better coming from a 3rd party so the hotel feel like any upgrade or gesture from them would be an unexpected surprise for you both, rather than coming across as you trying to get a freebie.

Have you booked through a travel agent or website?
I would drop them an email and ask them to advise the hotel. They can put a simple request on the booking saying that it's your honeymoon.
It is best to advise them before you go as rooming lists etc are done at least a day before you arrive and they might not be able to give you a better room or do anything for you when you arrive.
Lots of people do it and no I don't think it is cheeky at all.
