I say definitely go for it.

You have your secretarial qualifications that you have earned and there is no reason you shouldn't be able to do the work - I think you will be surprised.

    Good luck!

I have spoke to one of my friends who is a legal secretary at my place of work this morning and she has told me they are really desperate and to go for it. Apparently they are more than willing to train people up as no one is applying with the money they are offering.

Also i am going to get my typing back up to speed at home, i will need it sooner or later anyway.

    Best of luck!

Your typing speed will soon pick up once you are back in the workplace. Please don't worry about your lack of ability or rustiness - 3 years away is nothing. You will soon be super quick!

Good luck, sounds well worth a try.

Most law firms (from my experience) employ on a probationary period anyway where this is a one week notice period during that probation. Probation is usually up to 3 months, but sometimes extended.

I worked as a legal secretary for many years and there were many staff who didn't have legal backgrounds or training, just secretarial, some not even much of that! It's not too difficult, especially if the solicitor knows you are new to the job. Plus if you find an experienced secretary who you get on with, it only takes seconds to ask and check with them.

Go for it - you may be rusty at first but it'll all come back to you. Good luck!

I think go for it definately. As for typing speeds, don't worry, you have the basic skills and speed improves with practice. I agree with you suggesting a month trial and what hours you can work, you are showing a professional attitude before you even start:j .

Re the others - don't let them get to you. From the other side of the fence, a good secretary is a God send and the fastest way to mess up a client file is to either p**s off your sec or not have her on side. (You’re the interface with the client remember…). Don't know what kind of firm it is - a lot of the work may be pretty dull and repetitive - but at least that way you learn the terminology (not hard, just odd!) and can put it on your CV if you decide to move on.

Same deal applies to clients – some have heads firmly up posteriors and think their lawyer has no right to do anything except wait with panting anticipation by the phone for their call – but rude types on phones exist everywhere.

No matter what job you move to there will be cows and cretins - but if they're only happy when being she-dogs then we should feel sorry for them, surely...

    Hi there :)

Any opportunity you have getting into a specialist field of secretarial work is worth it's weight in gold cos that's where the money lies! I would kill (well not literally!) to get into legal or medical but they all ask for 2yrs min experience and I'm 35 with 3 kids so can't afford to go in as a Junior to start from scratch so if you get the opportunity, go for it!!

Good luck, I'm sure after a week or two you'll fit right in!

Chunky79 - I think you are in a position of power here! Go for it! How long have you been a cleaner with the firm? Would you get a good reference from them? Explain your situation - say you will feel much more relaxed at work if you are able to do the hours you have requested.

An extra £2 an hour - that is a fantastic payrise!

Also think about the future. I'm assuming that once trained up (you could maybe get some additional qualifications at night school?) you will command a higher wage as a legal secretary then a cleaner - that is fantastic news all around.

About the Beeatches - I've been there - just be super professional with them and that's it. Stick with the nice women you know they will probably be happy for another nice person to be joining them.
