Royal Mail Claim - Item value

Hi, I've had an ebay member state a parcel hasn't arrived. Its been over 15 working days, so we're assuming it's lost. I'm going to claim from Royal Mail and have the correct form. Under the section for 'Value' do I put how much I sold it for which was £6 + £8 actual postage, or do I put how much the item cost me to buy in the first place ? as that was £20.

Even after RM admitted that an Ebay purchased parcel had been damaged by the postman throwing the parcel over a fence on to concrete, and even though first class is insured for £46 loss or damage, after three months and four letters, I only received the cost of the postage back!!!

When I've claimed in the past it's always been for the Ebay sale price rather than the original retail price. I've always sent printouts of the original Ebay listing, the PayPal payment and refund screenshots.

RM have always paid the claim plus the postage in full.

If you have original proof of the cost of £20, that is what you should put down for the value. There is a separate box for the value of the postage.

The claim form (P58) that you submit to Royal Mail covers this in section 8.

There is no need to submit any of the Ebay details with the claim.

The form specifically asks whether it is an eBay claim or not, RM do not like people playing fast and loose with compensation and I would certainly suggest the buyer takes the 'other ' advice here.

Thanks Soolin, I'm going to claim for the ebay cost, which seems fair. Can't ask for more than that as if the parcel had arrived then that's what I would have got anyway. :-)

But if it had sold for £30, would you expect to get £30 from RM?

Royal Mail always make me claim the cost price - so why should this be different?

You should claim cost if you have the receipt - otherwise use Ebay evidence and claim the Ebay price.

Royal Mail like to have their cake & eat it

When you are selling something & making a profit they only want to pay you what you paid for it & not the extra profit ( IIRC someone took them to court over this a few years back & RM settled out of court to avoid setting a precedent )

However when you are selling something for less than you paid for it they only want to pay you the sale price & not the cost price

Given the above unfair policy then what I would do in your situation is simply send them a copy of a receipt showing the items cost price & claim for that (& not mention ebay at all)
