Toshiba warranty

Hi, I am a computer repairier and was given a Toshiba laptop to repair. I found the hard drive had failed.
The warranty on the laptop expired 6/6/13 but the faulty hard drive was only manufactured 20/12/12 so I called the owner and asked if the laptop had been repaired previously and indeed it had - by Toshiba.
So basically, the first hard drive lasted 7 months and the second only 6 months.
I called Toshiba and they explained the warranty on replacement parts was only 90 days (I find 90 days for a hard drive hard to accept)
They offered to extend the warranty for a further 2 years at a cost of £166.80. I feel this is unacceptable. Is there a course of action I can take? Could I (or my client) claim under goods not fit for purpose?
Hope you can help
Kevin

Who did your client originally purchase the laptop from? Any remedy has to be provided by the retailer and not the manufacturer.
Are you sure the hard drive has failed due to a fault rather than the laptop being dropped or moved around a lot whilst turned on and in use? Most home users don't realise how fragile a hard drive is and regularly carry them from room to room while still browsing/watching something, and as you will know it just takes a tiny knock at the wrong moment and the drive is ruined.0
