Renting with a view to eventually buying in the area

Has anyone ever rented for year or so to see what it's like to live in that area before you buy?
I currently have a mortgage but regret moving to this area. Someone I know has done this and recommends it but they don't have a mortgage! I know there would be selling and moving costs involved but I am also concerned that house prices would rise and thus I could lose money.
And when it comes to make predictions about house prices from all the stuff I've read the only way to guarantee what will happen is to be a time traveler!
A friend has suggested I could rent out my place but I'm not sure if that would work. Any advice or guidance would be appreciated.

I did this. Ended up loving where I moved to but then got priced out. I didn't have a lot of equity in my property tho and my circumstances changed as I became a SAHM so one less salary coming in but I would still recommend doing it.
I've moved again now and renting again just to make sure of the area.
If you can rent out your place (please do this correctly) then I would recommend this also.0
