Student: Ability to get non-student card with bank?

Hi,

I know this is something my bank will probably be able to clarify but I was just wondering if anyone else has been in the same situation.

Basically I have a student account and student credit card with Lloyds, however I would prefer a card that actually earned me something. They have their Avios card which I would prefer to convert my student card to. I have had this account for a year now.

Would the fact I hold a student account with them automatically limit me to only their student credit card?

Annoyingly my housemate got accepted for the Avios Duo off the back of our joint bank account (for the house); he holds no other accounts with them.

I'm not too fussed if the answer is no, just wondered if it may be possible.

I tried it and couldn't get it when I was a student. Don't know if that was an automatic thing, or because I didn't have enough of a record.

I got their student one, then when I moved to a graduate account got the avios one.

a student account on its own wont effect what you are eligible for.

but most students dont have the credit history, nor the income to get anything else anyways.

Student accounts are pretty good thou with thier interfere overdrafts and credit cards without needing much credit history.

one problem you might have with the student account is that quite often they have large overdraft so you might end up having too much credit already

I've got a separate income currently of 12k a year, which isn't based on student loan/grant. I've had a catalogue account for about three years, however my longest credit card is the lloyds at one year.

I'm guessing the fact my housemate is named on our joint account (just me and him) which has about £1.6k being paid in each month they must have internally assessed him on that as income, thus giving him access to the Avios card.

In comparison I should have a better profile as I have my own money with them and a form of credit history along with being on the joint account- knowing my luck my student status with the bank will dash my plans.

Ah well. It will be interesting to see if I can convert it when I go in next month to close the joint account down.

    Thanks for the help :)

Just (if you can) make sure that he doesn't screw up by not paying on time - you and your other housemates are now financially linked to him!

I've now moved out and will be closing the joint account down next month after all the final bills have been paid, so he can mess up all he likes after that!

Do you know if I need to tell credit files of this financial disassociation or will it be automatic once all accounts are closed?

I'm not 100% sure whether Lloyds lets you have more than one credit card from them, but I think it's worth talking to your local branch and see if you have a good chance of getting Avios card. They could probably give you an indication as they'd see your internal scoring..

Ah, I'm not looking to get another card but convert/upgrade my student credit card to the Avios :)
