Re-Painting Decking

Hi
We need to paint our new patio as the old paint has peeled off. Will paint a very similar colour. Few questions please.
1- Do i need to remove existing paint first? (i am secretly hoping i dont as it will mean a lot more extra work!)
2- How do i properly clean the decking? The wooden groves seem to have collected dust and leaves in places. is pressure washer best option?
3- Then do i simply apply more paint and use it?
4- Any particular techniques / tools to use when reapplying or just roller?
5- Do i need a top protective coat?

1) You can jet wash the deck to remove dirt / paint etc and brush down with a stiff yard brush or with a wire brush to remove slightly more paint / dirt.
2) See above.
3) Apply decking paint / stain with roller or brush/pad (usually supplied with paint).
4) Read the tin. Usually brush pad along the decking.
5) No top coat required if correct decking paint / stain is applied. Again read the paint tin/pot etc.0 -
I find decking oil works better, it soaks into the wood and doesn't peel, just need to keep it done yearly...Mortgage Free Wannabe Light Bulb Moment (Early 2012, started May 2012)

yes , you can oil after decking is stripped , you don't want to paint it with anything else0

if you want a natural wood effect , then you could use this http://www.deckingstain.co.uk/acatalog/ds_rustins_decking_stain.htm0

I have just found out that the existing stuff is a Wicker Extra Performance Timbercare in "sherwood green" colour (saw an old tin in the shed!). Now i cant find the same product on the website as its probably out of manufacture now.
It appears its water based. i will give it a try with pressure washer, then oil it and then stain.0 -
The 'How to Clean and Refinish a Wood Deck' guide on about.com may prove useful.0

sorry for another daft question. The normal pressure washers have pressure of 110 ro 120 psi. is this enough for stripping?0

Is the oil "coloured" or do i need to apply something else after oil for colour?
You can get various colours of decking oil, they work well and you don't get "paint flaking" that happens on the coloured stains over time...Mortgage Free Wannabe Light Bulb Moment (Early 2012, started May 2012)
