Insurance whilst having cancer

Hi,

My wife unfortunately has breast cancer. She is going through the treatment at the moment ie tablets and radiotherapy. No chemo yet but that may come later.

We have a worldwide insurance policy with Direct Travel Insurancewhich covers the whole family. Its due for renewal in a few months. We all love our holidays and try to go away whenever we can and we dont want to have to stop this due to this awful illness.

My question is :-

How does something like this affect insurance whilst abroad. I understand i have to tell DTI of the chance in situation but will they refuse to insurance us, put the premiums up or will there just be certain exclusions that we are not covered for.

I will call them soon but thought i'd ask other peoples experiences as, sadly, this must affect a lot of people now a days

As with any serious condition you must tell the insurer.
They will usually increase the premium, often to levels that make it unaffordable or refuse cover.
Columbus direct for one often give you the choice to exclude a condition
from the policy, obviously then you are uninsured for anything relating to this.

    Google throws up this

Hope all works out OK for you.

If you mean Columbus Direct you can do it all on-line

Be careful if you do use them the very last bit as you purchase is a bit confusing as to if you are excluding or including an illness, but you have 14 days to cancel if you get it wrong so no worries. Also Topcashback give you about 27% cashback last time I looked.

No, sorry, i meant i'll try our current insurer first (Direct Travel). Ive been with them for a few years now so probably the best place to start before i look at others

If your insurers don't help or price themselves out, BUPA travel is worth a look. OH and I have a joint policy with them, I have a declared existing condition and they cover me including the condition. It isn't cancer and is stable, but they had no problem with it.
Not the cheapest of cover, but certainly not the most expensive. Over the years we have claimed twice due to unexpected cancellations and they have been great. No arguments, just a full and prompt refund of the costs incurred, less the excess of course.

My experience has been that there is an exclusion of anything associated with the cancer but premiums have stayed much the same. Ironically, although I'm now considered 'cured' by my consultant as they are doing 6 monthly checks it stays on my insurance until I'm completely discharged.
  • First try to call them and inform them regarding the problem and ask all the doubts you have. Depending upon there answer you can the further step. Asking directly all the questions to them makes you clear all the doubts.
