  • I have started doing a meal plan for the whole month! Neither me nor my OH drive so we sit down together and make a month-long menu, then do the bulk of the shopping at tesco.com (using any discount codes we find here of course!). I take a tin of soup to work for lunch every day so you can imagine how heavy our bags would be to carry back...We buy all the boxes, tins, packets and meat (to go in the freezer) then buy fruit/veg, bread, milk etc during the week, as I walk past Tesco on my way home from work. It works really, really well. Having all the basics right there means if we don't fancy something on one day we swap it with another thing. I also take advantage, when shopping, of BOGOFs or other special offers so in effect buy more than a month's worth of food. Then for the next month we take these extras into account when buying. We spend about £200 a month on food for two - I know lots of people here do it cheaper but we can afford it and eat handsomely, homecooked from scratch a lot of the time and no scrimping on ingredients. I reckon I could cut £50 off if I ever had to but we're still living below our means as it is and this has seriously saved us money, plus we have a better variety of meals (no more looking in the fridge in despair wondering what to eat.)

It's saved arguments, time and money and so mch stress, I would heartily recommend it. We have a whiteboard with each week's menu on it, too.

Mushroom risotto recipe now in Old Style recipe thread. As soon as I hit "post reply" it occured to me that I should have just put it straight in there in the first place!

Porcini are yummy & are expensive, but you don't need many. They last ages cos they're dried. I have started buying them loose from a deli & it works out a bit cheaper.
