Galaxy s4 Homescreen Won't Turn Off

I think I’ve upset the settings on my Samsung Galaxy s4 and would like some assistance.

Here’s what happened. I was moving some apps and widgets about on the Home screen and when I was finished went to turn it off as normal at the button at the bottom of the phone. It wouldn’t turn off. I tried one or two short presses – still no success.

I then tried a continues press and what happened was a black screen popped up and it seemed to show the last number of apps I was using, tap on it and it took you back to Home Screen. I can delete the apps here either by swipping them away or by putting them in the bin but that does no good. It was the first thing this screen appeared

It appears that the only way I can turn the phone off is by using the on/off button at the side of the phone. If I let the phone sit until The phone will turn on as normal with the bottom button.

Can anyone tell me how I can overcome this nag? Can I nominate one of the other screens to be the home screen to see what might happen.

If I deleted the Home Screen would another one take over automatically as the Home screen.

This is my first real smartphone so pardon in advance if I'm not using the correct terms.

What you've described in regard to the 'Home' and 'Power' buttons is exactly how my S3 works and a quick look at the S4 manual suggests that it is the same.

Screen timeout setting
• Sets the length of time the device waits before turning off the display’s backlight.

Power Button Function
• Press and hold to turn the device on or off.
• Press and hold for more than 7 seconds to reset the device if it has fatal errors or hang-ups, or freezes.
• Press to lock or unlock the device. The device goes into lock mode when the touch screen turns off.

Home Button Function
• Press to return to the Home screen.
• Press and hold to open the list of recent applications.

Also double short press on Home Button brings up 'S Voice' if enabled.

So you can turn the screen on to unlock it with the Home Button but you can't turn the screen off or lock it with the Home Button.
