Cheaper insurance via a 'black box'?

Our boy is taking his test this week, hopefully he will pass. Unfortunately, as he is 17 the insurance quotes we are getting are totally ridiculous, around £3500 for any car we can think of (although it was £8000 for a brand new £7500 Hyundai i10).
Anyway, we looked into this thing where you get a box fitted to your car which monitors the driving and if you behave - which is no bad thing as i remember what i was like at 17 and dont want him to drive like that! - affects the premium and seems a potential way of bringing the cost down...
which made me think, would it work for me? I m a bit 'driving miss daisy' - don't break the speed limit, careful driver, 30 years with no points - my insurance is not exactly expensive on a 1.4 Clio and MK1 MX5 but money is money and i like to save everything i can!
Anyone got any experience of these things, not only as a new driver which is what they seem to be tailored to, but as a 'mature' one...
any opinions appreciated!

Sometimes its cheap and sometimes it isnt. But the policies tend to be enflexible compared to others.
Possibly no driving other cars, Swapping cars mid policy can be costly. Then there is the issue of the companies that do it are not exactly well known for brilliant customer service.Censorship Reigns Supreme in Troll City...0
