Home insurance problems.

Hi

I am having trouble getting home insurance, last year had an under floor water leak, cost insurer £23000, new kitchen etc. Now insurance companies don't want to know. Does anyone know where I can get reasonable priced insurance. I am getting desperate.

Telephone and internet insurance services tend to run on what is crudely called FIFO underwriting. Fit in or f off.

This means you either fit in with their ideal customer profile or they are not interested in quoting via the internet or phone. The ideal often seems to be a 50 yr old, living in a 3 bed semi in the Cotswolds, employed as a bank clerk and with no claims or convictions.

That is the cynical view within the trade and I'm afraid the size of the recent claim is putting them off. You need to speak to an insurance broker who can speak to the non internet / phone divisions of the insurers and put your case to them.

Things they will want to know are:-
1) Underwater flood leak - was it caused by faulty pipes, high water table or do you live next to a river.
2) Any actions taken to prevent a recurrence, e.g. replacement of the pipes, water leak detectors fitted?

The insurers may choose to impose a higher excess for flood (say £1000, same as the subsidence excess) but you should still be able to get the cover if this was a one off incident.
