Not once have I put the blame for my poor credit onto anyone else. I have only been trying to make the point that the credit checking system for employees is unfair.

It is understandable that companies have to take precautions, but it is wrong to brand everyone with poor credit as a potential threat. Some people just want to work their way out of the credit problems they have, companies are not making it very easy for people to do this.

You are thinking about it wrong. Companies look at all employees as a threat, but it needs employees so it uses a wide variety of means to reduce that threat.

Agree Mr.C, - it's too broad a generalisation. I'm in an IVA and have never stolen so much as a sweetie - AND I feel guilty if I accidentally step on an insect... :o

No, it is a fact that they are more likely to go on to commit fraud than those that do not have poor credit.

The people you need to be angry at are those in your position that have committed fraud. Employers do not have time to psychologically profile every applicant, so unfortunately you are tarred by the same brush as others in your situation.

Well on that basis, things don't look too rosie for people like me in the employment market. Wish me luck folks.

Never been bankrupt, never had a CCJ. I am just behind paying bills... Why? Because I am out of work... I understand the charity thing, but to nearly get an interview, then to not because of this credit check seems crazy to me.

Thanks for your hope of improvement note. I hope it does too.

I've just noticed this. Things are not as bad as they may seem - I have friends with far worse than this that work at a well known credit reference agency, where they are seemingly very strict about debt. When they applied they were given a chance to explain why they were in debt and what they were doing to tackle it, and both were passed on the fact that they were taking steps to move forward.

Some employers will still take a hard line, but if it is only a case of late payments, others will be willing to hear you out.

It is not ridiculous, it is a fact.

the facts are the person with the most opportunity to steal will if they are that way regardless of debt.

You do post some rubbish! If someone is 'that way' (whatever 'that way' may be) they will steal, but in the absence of previous offences it is not possible for an employer to determine who is 'that way', is it? Hence they can only look at which groups are more likely to commit fraud, and those with bad debt fall into this category.

Its not rubbish its people assuming people with a bad credit rating will steal. Just like in my old co they said 'we never thought it was her' 'Oh did you not'!!??

And that's why companies get screwed over as they are looking in the wrong place

Also when I had a Saturday job in a bakers the manager would take stock home ever Saturday evening as they could - they had the keys to the stock and we knew it.

No one has said this - people with poor credit are more likely to steal, that does not mean they will. A woman aged 30 is more likely to become pregnant than a woman aged 45, that does not mean she will.

Seems unfair. Looks like if you are having financial difficulty, you are instantly branded a criminal. Just because someone is having financial problems doesn't mean they should be tossed aside for a job, just like you can't discount someone who is pregnant or over a certain age. Thanks for your replies.

Yeah but it makes you vulnerable, an easy target .. do you really want to be in that situation

I've been turned down to for specific credit check ref type job having a DRO and once quit a job because of feeling the above sadly but there are defintely employers/sectors out there who it means less to I can re-assure you : )

I agree it is soooo sad, heart braking to be rejected due to C/C alone - but a necessary evil for more then the employers protection in my POV - I'm also on the understanding you can try again when your credit trouble improves so there is always another chance? it doesn't have to be the end
