Insurance company threatening to cancel car insurance

In May I changed my car insurance policy to a different class and paid by credit card over the telephone for this change. (I had already paid in full for my car insurance when I renewed in December). The insurance company, KwikFit, took two payments instead of one. When I phoned them to query this they refuted my claim as their computer only showed one payment. I was told that I would have to give them a copy of my credit card statement but I couldn't do that at the time and instead contacted my credit card who said they would open a case and then refunded me one of the payments that had been taken. On Thursday I received a letter, dated 10th June (three days before I received the letter) telling me that I hadn't paid and they would cancel my policy in seven days (Monday). I sent them a pdf file of my credit card statement on Friday, tried to contact them this weekend and was informed that they would be back tomorrow (Monday) when they are due to cancel my policy. Do I pay them tomorrow for the charge and then try to get it back or do I risk being uninsured. The Customer Accounts team don't start work until 10 am (nice work if you can get it) and I have to work tomorrow too. Any help would be well received

Just phone their Customer Service number first thing tomorrow morning and they should stop any cancellation, while the payments issue is looked at.

When you phone ask the question, as to whether there is a duplicate policy, if there is only one payment showing on the policy they look at. If they cannot find two payments or know of a duplicate payments issue, then perhaps there were two policies set up.
The comments I post are personal opinion. Always refer to official information sources before relying on internet forums. If you have a problem with any organisation, enter into their official complaints process at the earliest opportunity, as sometimes complaints have to be started within a certain time frame.

Pay them and put a dispute in. It could cost them more if you make a formal complaint and take it further.

What did you change on the policy? As above its not a different policy is it?

If you let them cancel it you need to declare that when taking out insurance in future. Possibly forever.
Some insurers wont quote if you tick that box.

Risk being uninsured. Oh dear NO....

Hundreds of £ fine and 6 points and the vehicle impounded. £100+ to get it back. That wont be a good day.

  • I changed usage from commuter to business use. Only £6.10 raise in insurance but service fee was £30.00. Customer service doesn't work on a Sunday which is a nightmare especially if you need to contact them in an emergency. Would not recommend Kwik Fit at all after this
