Just moved into new house help please

Hi ive just moved into a new house today and changed councils. For council tax ive had a bill and they are asking me to pay the full 12 months money. Is this right when we are two and a half months in the new council tax year?

Sounds like they have had problems collecting in the past from the address.

And probably havent received any payment for this year, as you only pay until april, when a new budget is set.

write a letter and send it in to them, explaining you have just moved into the house and want to pay monthly.

No you aren't wrong. The previous occupants were liable until they moved out and you are only liable from when you moved in.

Is the bill addressed to you by name or to 'the Occupier'?

If it is to the Occupier, the probably don't know you have moved in, so you need to let them know when you moved in and ask for a bill from that date.
You might as well ask the Wizard of Oz to give you a big number as pay a Credit Referencing Agency for a so-called 'credit-score'

The only way that they could be charging you for the full year is if the start date of your council tax account is set at 01 April 2013 - have you checked the council tax band of the property against the council tax charge ? When did you purchase the property ?.
I no longer work in Council Tax Recovery but instead work as a specialist Council Tax paralegal assisting landlords and Council Tax payers with council tax disputes and valuation tribunals. My views are my own reading of the law and you should always check with the local authority in question.

Try a conversation with the council tax office, explain you just moved in, show them proof if needed, they will readjust the bill.

Send them a copy of your completion statement (the one from your Solicitor) as proof of when you took ownership.
