I have been having problems with my computer. When I talked to AOL live help I was told to turn off and back on and to press two keys together and then send the message that came up to the assistant. I did not have time to copy all his instructions and as I was fed up I just turned off for the day. Next day, oddly, my computer was quicker, colours were brighter but I was unableto Login to my favourite sites. This is all sorted now but I would still like to know why my desktop is very different and the Start menu is shorter. Before I contacted AOL my computer had become so slow that when I clicked on anything the outline came up and then the page took forever to fill in. My SIL says it's all about cookies but I've looked and don't believe that caused it. Any ideas anyone?
PS Registering with MSE again was a pain too.

Cookies won't really slow the PC down unless there was a huge number of them taking a huge chunk of your hard drive up. Was everything slow or just web browsing? What operating system do you run, what RAM have you got installed and how much HD free space have you got?0

Apologies for this late response Paul. For the past few days I have been trying to sort out the problems. It is slow to open now and does not do it automatically i.e. I now have to click in the centre box to get started. I could enter a search then had to wait as the page did not fill in (not had this problem before). As a result a simple job took a long time to do. Yesterday I tried System Restore. The blue line started...after a long time, and then only went about a quarter along the line. When I checked after two hours or more it still hadn't gone any further and it was obvious it wasn't going to. All sites I have used regularly no longer had me as a member. In particular I have tried to become a new member of MSE three times and now have to logon every time - it is not storing my password. And my user record is lost.
I have read right through the Dell manual and have now created a NEW restore point so I will try that shortly.
Sorry to go on but this might tell you what is wrong. When I turn on the computer and it is booting I get little box messages. First one is "Windows cannot load the locally stored profile and is logging you on with a temporary profile. Changes you make to this profile will be lost when you log off."
Any ideas? As you can see I can use this computer but something has gone wrong. Maybe it is caused by one of the downloads I did recently. I have a few security downloads but I don't think they are working properly (AVG 7.5,
McAfee was on when I bought this machines, BIG FIX (keeps flashing) etc
Hope you can help.0 -
Remove McAfee, only one anti-virus! Blue text on this forum usually signifies hyperlinks, so click on them!..:wall:0

your profile is corrupted...log on as the administrator...browse to c:\documents and settings\Username where username is your username...this will be a folder which holds information about the stuff you have on your desktop, IE, cookies, favorites etc...rename this folder...then log off and log back on using your own username...a new profile will be created for you...log back off and log back on...browse to c:\documens and settings\...you will now see a new folder with your username...copy everything from the folder that you previously renamed to the new folder...then log off and log back on with your normal username...you should be ok0
