Planning Permission help!

Hi,
My neighbour has recently been granted planning permission for a two storey rear extension. She came round this morning to talk about Party Wall etc... yet surprised us with the fact that she also wants to add a loft conversion to the building works. Naturally, we were a little stunned by this, as it came completely out of the blue and was never mentioned in her plans at any stage until today.
My neighbour believes that she can do the loft under the rules surrounding permitted development. But to our eyes is all seems a bit wrong that she can suddenly increase the size of the development by a third - including adding a third floor - without ever mentioning it in the original plans. It would seem to make a mockery of the whole planning process.
Then again we may be wrong! So it would be great if someone could tell me if this is all part of the game, or whether we have any grounds to object.
Thanks for your time.
Phil Boucher

I'm not sure, but i think she is right to a point, would depend on what she's doing. Internal work usually doesnt require planning permission.

Why does it bother you? surely it actually adds value to your house, as there is now potential to do the same for you.
  • I am just slightly concerned that it may take away light from my downstairs. Also, it just seems that she is pulling a bit of a fast one.
  • And thanks for replying too. Much appreciated.

I can't see how a loft conversion will take away light.

She may or may not need planning permission, what she will need is Building Regulations Approval.
If you are querying your Council Tax band would you please state whether you are in England, Scotland or Wales

Check the planning portal of your local council website for "permitted developent"....

Or pop in and speak to a planning officer.
