Cordless phone battery drain

I have a BT Synergy 5500 cordless phone. The handset was increasingly running out of battery life so as I have done in other phones, I replaced the batteries with new ones & put it back on the base station but they didn't seem to charge. Since then I have put the old ones back in, tried others from other handsets (they are all Ni-Mh batteries as per the original) but it still refuses to work. Curiously, if I put in fully charged batteries it turns on briefly & then very rapidly (ie within a few seconds) drains the batteries - when they go back into another handset they are flat. I am completely stumped - before this it worked reasonably & now is dead as a dodo! Why is it draining fully charged batteries???? Any ideas?

Could be a short circuit. Probably best to seek a replacement, I wouldn't try charging it again as with anything electrical it can become dangerous if there is a fault.0

Check that the contacts did not get wet or even a tiny bit of water seeped between them.0
