Providian Credit Card Help!!

in Credit cards
Hi I am new to this forum and yet you guys have helped my wife on some money matters in the past, so I am hoping you guys can help me out.
Today I received a letter from a company called CCS Collect, asking to speak to me about a personal matter following an investigation.
Of course I quickly called them up to ask what this was about, and it turns out to be something passed into them...by Cabot Fiance. About a credit card I had with someone called Providian, apparently I had a credit card with them.
I told them I was unsure about this debt and I would need to look into my files, the reason I am confused as this has been apparently traced from my old address....in which I have not lived there for just over 6 years now.
And I have no paperwork dealing with Providian or Cabot....so I am at a lose in to how to sort out this strange mess. Yes over 6 years ago I realise is a long time. But I cleared up most of my debts before I moved.
I am hoping you all could lend me a hand....as I have no statements or paperwork dealing with Cabot or Providian...and if I did have them...then this card is well over 7 years old.
Is there anything I can do to trace the card or debt...as I am not sure about giving money to a company that I don't trust....and also paying money onto a false debt that could have already been paid.
Any help would be great....thanks for your time

If you've not heard anything from them for over six years then its statute barred, but it might help if you knew whether this was your event or not. You could send them a prove it letter but that might open up a can of worms so ignoring it may be best.0

Telling them that you were unsure about a debt is not like telling them it is not your debt.
Be straight with us here - is it your debt or not?
Come back with a reply and we will advise further.0 -
You should check your credit file carefully. If it's not there, chances are, it is barred, however, you do need to be honest and tell us if you have any recollection of this at all?
If you do, then a prove-it letter will tell you whether they have a claim or not going by the last date of an acknowleging payment. If not, then ignore them - they're fishing for your details and looking for someone to pin it on.Debt Free! Long road, but we did it

Thank you for all the advice. Rang up Cabot Finance themselves, turned out it was my debt, and we came to an agreement. The debt is now settled, and am awaiting the final settlement notice. Am pleased that this is out of the way.0
