Ryanair billed me for flight I didn't use

Some time ago while booking a ryanair flight the website crashed right after I'd entered my debit card details, I never got a flight confirmation or anything like that.
A few days later I lost my debit card and got a new one.
A few days after that I got a letter from Barclays saying Ryanair had tried to bill that card (the one I cancelled) and I was to call them if it was a fraudulent transaction.
I called up and explained that it wasn't a fraudulent transaction but it shouldn't have gone through anyway because it was incorrect. They told me that they couldn't see that transaction in any case and I shouldn't worry about it.
Yesterday I got billed for the cost of the flight, I called up Barclays this morning and they told me the only thing they can do is send me a paper form which I'm to return and they will investigate with Ryanair and get back to me within 14 working days.
Does it basically sound like I have no hope of seeing that money again?

If you have website/internet issues after you've submitted payment details, and don't receive confirmation of either success or failure, it just makes good financial sense to contact the payee to find out whether you have or haven't made a purchase.
Has the date of the flight passed? If not, then why not just accept the payment and take the flight, presumably you wanted to go when you were booking in the first place.0 -
So, you didn't really want the flight? You just forgot about it?

Presumably you wanted to fly, so how did you get to your destination?
Don't Ryanair send a confirmation via email?0 -
Yes of course they do but OP lost their debit card a few days later (convenient or what LOL) so it doesn't count LOL0

It was originally a spoof quote but they didn't deny they were considering it when asked. It would make sense on their business plan, not so much for the revenue it would raise but it would reduce use and so cleaning and turnaround costs which they are always looking to do, that trick of printing the emergency instructions on the seat backs rather than having pockets and cars saves them tens of millions a year in cleaning and turnaround.0 -

They did not supply the service for which you were paying, so you are not obliged to pay. Assuming, that is, that you never received a confirmation email or any kind of e-ticket.0
