Caxton PrePay CC / Oversees Fee

I will be heading over to Benidorm in September and I'm looking for the cheapest option of taking money.

Looking at the Caxton FX Euro Card in particular, they don't charge a fee for cash withdrawals in Eurozone countries but would the cash machines over there charge a fee to take cash out using this type of card?

I understand the risks with a currency card like losing it etc but i'm not the type of person to lose things, I'm very careful.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Also, could you answer my poll as if you were in my position on what form of currency to take so I can get a general consensus.

If you was going to Benidorm, what is the main form of money that you will take? 6 votes

Obviously it depends how long you are going for etc but if your the type not to lose things and your not going for a long time then I personally would take Euros for spending money rather than messing about with any prepaid cards etc. I'd most likely have prepaid the hotel at the point of booking so no big expense and I'd have my credit cards for emergencies

I'm only going for 4 nights for a stag weekend. Hotel is already paid for so the only money I would take is for beer and food. I don't want to take 4 nights worth of money with me because I'll either have to carry it around with me where ever I go or put my trust in the hotel and their safes.

I Think Travellers cheques are out the question due to unrealistic exchange rates and commission. So it's either cash or current card.

Obviously, my bank card will be with me for emergency funds.

Ignore any attempt to steer you towards a Euro card.
  • If you are able to get something like the Halifax Clarity cc that is one of the cheapest ways of getting money abroad. It gives a good exchange rate and there are no transaction charges or ATM fees as long as the ATM you use doesn't charge for withdrawals. The only charge is interest on cash withdrawals but if you're only going for a long weekend you can check your balance when you get home and pay the balance as soon as the transactions appear and the interest will be a few pence.

If you have a Tesco's credit card and want to get some cash before you go find a Tesco's branch with a bureau de change and buy euros on your Tesco card. The rate isn't as good as the Halifax Clarity when used abroad but there are no charges or interest. For small amounts if you want the security of euros in your pocket in case you have card problems it's a possibility. To give you an example, my daughter needed some spending money for a school trip and we didn't have enough euros left from our summer holiday. I got €50 on my tesco card in my local supermarket for about £43. If I had withdrawn the same amount abroad on my Halifax Clarity it would have cost about £41.

Marks and Spencer used to do something similar. I don't know if they still do.

In both cases you need ID.

    I hope this helps.

I've just realised I've answered the poll wrongly

If I had things to pay for I'd use my CC - which is what I answered

For cash I'd use my debit card in an ATM

Neither of them charge - yours might

I'd probably takes some cash as well from the cheapest easily accessible BdeC

I do have a prepaid card but rarely use it - it's more trouble than it's worth. You get money left on it you can't spend
