Reopening a settled house insurance claim

A few months back a pipe in my house which is rented out started to leak and brought down the dining room ceiling. The pipe was repaired and the ceiling replaced. The insurance company settled the claim.

Six months on there is a problem with the electrics in the house and the electrician that was called out seems to think there may be water damage above the dining room that is affecting the electrics. They want to take down the ceiling once again to investigate.

Can I reopen the claim with the insurance company or should I make a fresh claim?

Comments

  • Yes claims can be reopened. You basically need to phone them up, quote your old claim reference and say an electrician reckons the incident caused further damage which has only just become apparent. They should then reopen the claim and deal with it from there.
