On-Line Debit Card - Abroad Functionality

Hello,
I was wondering if you could advise - I'm due to go to South Africa soon and have and opened an N&P light account - purely, because of the free purchases and withdrawals abroad.
I have noticed that my card is 'X2X' or on-line, so I was wondering if I could still use it in ATM's or shops abroad?
Will it affect my functionality abroad or should I just use my AMEX?

Thank you all for helping me make my day by saving money!

Yes you should be able to use it it abroad or it would be pretty useless.0

What is an 'on-line' debit card? I have just opened the same account so interested to know if the debit card works any different to any other VISA/Mastercard debit card.0

They are debit cards that require to check with the issuer for every transaction and will often be declined in instances where this isn't possible.
They are generally issued on basic accounts, savings accounts and to people with lower credit scores on standard current accounts.Venusflytrap wrote: »What is an 'on-line' debit card? I've used my n&p light card in Japan, Denmark, Sweden, The Netherlands, Ireland, Spain and the USA, all without any hassles. I usually send them a secure message though to let them know where I'll be and when, to help prevent my card being blocked.0

Thanks CG19a. I'll remember that.0

You cannot use it for car hire. It only permits real time debits at the POS, not the ability by firms to shadow charge potential charges - like some Pre-Auth petrol pumps.
These cards are not as useful as a standard card, but better than nothing.0 -
I am uncertain as to the benefit (from N&P's perspective) of issuing full current account holders such a card that seemingly has limited applications. You cannot use it for car hire. However for me, this doesn't really matter as long as I do not get a rejection when using my card for 'normal purchases' or withdrawing my funds. My CCs will take care of other 'off-line' transactions (if this is the correct terminology).0 -
The benefit (to the bank) is that they get to authorise all transactions, so you can't go overdrawn.0
