First credit card - Luma. Help!!!

    Never use more than 70% of the card and pay in full every month
  • For credit building I would just use the card for something like petrol. Unless you travel a lot for work your petrol usage is likely to be very similar each month so your bill will be fairly constant and you'll be able to budget more easily. If you put all your spending on the card you're more likely to overspend and then struggle to pay the bill.

    I agree with setting up a direct debit for the minimum amount as you will avoid late payment markers on your file. However the more of your bill you can pay each month, the more of your credit card borrowing you are actually repaying, and the less it will cost you in interest. If you can clear your bill in full and on time each month it will cost you nothing and if your current account is one which pays you interest you will actually be better off.

    Credit cards used wisely are a great servant. Used wrongly, they can be a harsh master.
