how comes it is acceptable to give people instructions on here of "how to copy music from a cd" for backup purposes yet any attempt made by anyone to ask how to "copy a dvd" is imediately frowned upon and the topic closed?
surely they both involve copying potentially infringing material that the person may or may not have the copyright permission for? i just find it strange how it has become acceptable to help people copy music (prob due to the ipod revolution) but not copy films?
if microsoft put a dvd ripper in media player would that be acceptable? the only reason they put an mp3 ripper in there is because people were moving to competitive software?
if the archos handheld media players become as popular as mp3's would it then be deemed acceptable to provide instructions on how to create divx's to play on these machines??
just curious on peoples opinions really

I thought it was illegal to rip music cd's too since the EUCD (or UK equivalent implementation) was put in place. So either DVD or CD talk, effectively should not be allowed.
Personally I feel it's a ridiculous and rather stupid directive. A good example would be; DVD rippers became illegal because they decrypt the protection put on DVD's. Someone even got jailed for writing a decrypter so that he could watch his legally bought dvd movies on his Linux machine (as you need to decrypt the disc in order to even watch it). This eventually got over turned though.
Also, with regards to music, this means that if you already own the cd, to legally get it onto your iPod you have to buy the album all over again, but in mp3 format."Boonowa tweepi, ha, ha."0 -
nelly, all though there are board guides, admin, abuse controllers on the site, they dont read each and every thread, so alot of it is relied on the members helping also by reporting any threads that may be unsuitable. This means that sometimes posts do slip through that may prehaps shouldnt.0

m00nie,i get that, but it seems that all posts that talk about copying music are deemed acceptable now but almost any video issue topic is pounced on VERY quickly0

CD Music licensing is very different from that off DVD Movie licensing. The reason DVD queries are deleted is because it's common knowledge that not a single Licensee has permitted copying of DVD films.
If people were to talk about how to overcome copy protection on a music CD that would also be deleted, CD's without copy protection are allowed to be copied for backup purposes unless it states otherwise.

Hi,
With the amount of posts we have on the forum it is not possible for the abuse team to monitor every one. We work a report system and take action on posts as they are reported to us. Occasionally a few slip through the net due to sheer volume but the general rule is that advice/links how to backup copyrighted media is not allowed here. This also goes for P2P/file sharing software. There is no leniency towards either DVD or CD medium the same rule applies for both - it is just coincidence if it appears otherwise.
While it may seem a strict rule, the team are very concerned about both the welfare of the site and of its posters and cannot allow links or advice to break copyright to be displayed knowingly. There are many other forums that freely allow this kind of discussion. All I can really suggest is asking these questions on them instead if you are desperate for advice.

i am not interested in advice regarding the issues, i know the answers.
it just seems that more mp3 ripping music ripping topics slip through - there is one thats in the top 5 topics at the moment titled 'Copying Favourite Tracks To H/drive', how does this differ from say a topic titled 'copy favourite dvd to h/drive'?
btw i understand accept tony_h post, and I am not here to start an argument i am just merely questioning the 'real rules' which seem to have been somewhat bent by the acceptance of branded products into everyday life.0 -
If that is the case, it would only be because they are not reported. If the abuse team see or are reported topics like you suggest, they would be removed/edited/locked as appropriate in either case. There is no softer line towards audio copyright, if it appears so it must simply be a coincidence.0

This appears to be due to my thread about memory sticks. Let me explain. According to the documentation with my clie and its software ripping tracks from a cd you own to put on my pda as an mp3 player is not illegal. The magic gate system sony uses includes copyright protection and when you rip a cd it includes a limit on the number of devices you can install it on - usually 1 or 3 according to the open magic gate jukebox software supplied with the device. Imay be wrong but the implication is that I am not infringing copyright - I own the CD and can play it on another (non CD) device, I cannot distribute sell or lend it, but I am using copyright protection for the music provider. I presumed that this was what th magic gate system of memory sticks was for (thus the extra expense). If I am wrong I apologise in advance.Gas doc on the loose0
