useful apps for android

My wife is getting a cheap android tablet (probably a NATPC one) - I suspect primarily for use as a e-reader and video viewer. Now I can see myself having to look after it, and explaining how to use it.
So what apps would you recommend to download to a new tablet to (a) make it more useable, (b) easier to maintain.
Apologies if this has already been asked (in which case just point me to the right place), but I haven't been able to find the info or use the correct search terms to find out.
Thanks in advance

one thing you should install is "app cache cleaner"
Android apps *should* handle memory and temp files clean-up automatically but most never do.
The the cache cleaner sits in the background and every so often cleans out the temp files. It's a godsend if you're limited on storage and things like "tweetdeck" "Firefox" "Facebook" decdide to let their temp files eat up 300Mb+ of storage!Laters

If she follows news stories or blogs etc then i'd recommend Feedly as an RSS reader/aggregator - just search or add the feeds you're interested in and then you have them all in one place. It's a nice interface too which can't be said about a lot of them

Sorry for the delay in replying - life/things got a little complicated.
Thanks for the suggestions, which I will get her to have a think about.
However I was thinking more in terms of recommendations for useful management apps for things like file management, backup, anti-virus etc.0 -
TrustGo anti virus free
its in the Google Play store0 -
If she likes to read blogs, I recommend Pocket(read it later) its an app where you store what you found interesting to read later and when you have time read it even without internet connection0

inSSIDer - useful when trying to figure out why your WiFi isn't working.

so many recommendations! First of all, get someone to "Root" the phone - it gives you so much more control over everything (and go to the opensource cyanogen mod if you can)
So some app recommends:
If you root your phone 'Greenify' is a free app that will allow you to stop background operating apps (the task manager apps don't stop functioning, they just kill an app and then it starts up 1 second later)
News - 'Flipboard' is great
Notes - 'Catch' is a lot better that 'Evernote' (but I have a real thing against bloaty software)
Writing on your phone - 'Writer' (has a picture of a white W on black background. im not sure who makes it)
'kids place' - if you have kids you can lock them into a small part of the phone with very few options.
Backup - Titanium backup does me well
to monitor your bandwidth and cellphone bandwidth data - 'My Data manager' is a solid, no-frills-but-get-it-all-done app
And most of all, use the google widget! I never have to search for an app on my phone, i just type the beginning of the app name in the Google Search widget (on my home screen) and it takes me right to it.
Anyway, happy hunting. I'll definitely be coming back to see what else people have for you.0
