If you need a reliable witness then I'm available at very reasonable rates

Many years ago some people used to loiter near courts willing to offer 'evidence' in favour of a party for payment. They used to identify themselves by putting a piece of straw in the shoes. Hence the phrase -'man of straw'.

    I don't believe this.

That's not something that I have ever heard, and it is something that I find very hard to believe considering that the phrase traditionally refers to misrepresenting someone's argument and then arguing against the misrepresentation to make it look like you have won the argument. In court terminology it also refers to someone who does not have the financial means to meet a money judgment against them. Also, the origin of that term as I understand it comes from straw effigies and such (hence an alternative term being 'Aunt Sally' based on a figure in a fairground game).

    Interesting codswallop.

So everyone entering court recognised these early day vaio's prepared to give false witness as they saw them with the straw in their shoes????

Then saw them again in the witness box????

(This is not the origin of the expression man of straw!)

    Update

Friend has received letter from insurers informing him that its uneconomical to repair after inspection by an engineer and should the situation change then insurers will inform him.

Also that his insurance has been cancelled.

    He had fully comprehensive insurance.

Pls don't shout but does that mean he is unable to legally drive any other car unless he takes out further insurance cover.

Also will he be compensated for the remainder of months on his previous policy

I think his insurance policy is like mine in the event of total loss, full premium is payable and the insurane ends right there and then.

So he needs to buy a new insurance policy but it will be hefty in the mean time until claim has been settled.

Normally yes - unless the other car's insurance covers him (that would be unusual). It is possible to get "any driver" insurance but most cars wouldn't have this.

It sounds like the full premium is payable if you've made a claim and the policy ends after a write-off.

If you mean driving other cars under OP's own Insurance, a very significant amount of companies stipulate DOC is subject to the insured car (Original car) not being the subject of a write off
  • Your friend may not have had any cover to drive other cars on a TP basis anyway.

Some people have the misconception that comprehensive cover automatically includes cover for driving other cars. This is not the case.

Even insurers that normally include this sort of cover don't generally offer driving other cars cover to young or inexperienced drivers.

If anyone is unsure please check your certificate and/or schedule before getting behind the wheel and if your still in doubt check with your insurer.
