Surely the words "xbox one" have no place on a moneysaving forum

I am not just referring to the rrp of the console

If I was going to make the move to a new console I would then need to buy all new controllers and headsets as well as keeping my gold subscription up to date and no longer being able to buy second hand games at a reduced price.

Thankfully Microsoft have a suggestion for us..... If we are not happy then we should just stick with the 360 :D

    Hi miniemma

    It's a good point, consoles aren't cheap.

But MSE's about cutting costs without cutting back, on the things you want. So if you do the Budget Planner, and use our Money Mantras first and are happy you can personally afford it, then you use the Megashopbot to get it for the best price, and maybe even get it through a cashback website then all's good :)
Could you do with a Money Makeover?

this was always going to happen, and you will probably find that it will carry on happening (even with a PS4) as they move to digital distribution for games just the same as it happened for PC's with Steam so it will happen with consoles,

you will have a disk version at say £45 and a digital download for £35-40 but lose the sell on value some people will buy the digital version because the second hand ‘trade in’ value isnt much more than £10-15 and it saves them having to go 'into town' etc etc,

this then reduces the amount of copies for sale, and starts making the price of second hand games increase, meaning less people will buy second hand and will go DD themselves, then wham bam the normal ‘trade in’ places close down and there is no place to buy or sell your second hand games so everyone turns to DD, microsoft/sony have then cut out the ‘middle man’ profit margin and the competition from second hand sales and can increase the price accordingly so they make more money
    Drop a brand challenge
on a £100 shop you might on average get 70 items save
    10p per product = £7 a week ~ £28 a month
    20p per product = £14 a week ~ £56 a month
30p per product = £21 a week ~ £84 a month (or in other words one weeks shoping at the new price)

Disagree with this, these consoles are cheap considering what a decent smart phone costs, take apple for example, for the cost of an Iphone 5 64gb you can own nearly 2 very powerful nex gen gaming machines that are future proof for a 10 years cycle

miniemma must have a short memory. XB One will be £429 I think at launch. How much was the XBox360, XBOX, PS3, PS2 at launch? Launch time has to be the most expensive time to buy a console, even if they may be sold at a loss right at the start!
I've a massive list of games to get out of the way on the 'old' consoles, so my moneysaving tip is to wait until you've got the best out of your current equipment...

Difference ofcourse being that Smartphones generally have multiple uses atleast one of which is borderline vital, whereby games consoles have multiple uses none of which are critical for living in a modern society. They're far from future proof (they will be made to look very old very quickly thanks to PC gaming) and ultimately atleast in Xbox One's case, are reliant on 100% uptime at Microsoft's end. That's not something I would put a great deal of faith in given it's Microsoft & they've managed to greatly annoy millions of script kiddies, it's a matter of time before Xbox Live's brought to it's knees.

Phones aren't exactly futureproof either. From what I understand the Xbox One is supposed to be much more than just a games console and will have as long or longer a shelf life as most smartphones (most people change phones every 2 years or so). As for the second hand games, I am not sure about that as I don't tend to buy second hand games. I do buy old games though which tend to be pretty cheap for PC, particularly on Steam offers where you can get some old classics for a pound or whatever. should imagine a similar thing for Xbox

That wasn't the point being made - it was the lack of compatibility with 360 accessories and the restricted second hand sales the OP was referring to which they're quite right, will make the console a pricey start. That's no different to the 360 or PS3 but on the other hand, the Wii-U uses the same controller and other accessories as the Wii which made it a bit less painful on the wallet to change over to so it's not completely unreasonable to expect similar from the new consoles.

For reference though the Xbox 360 was £279 at launch for the premium version with hard drive while the original Xbox was £299. The original version of the 60GB PS3 (software PS2 backwards compatibility, card readers, SACD etc.) was £425 at launch and the PS2 was £299. That makes the Xbox One the most expensive console there has been although probably not when adjusted for inflation.

It's not so much the cost of the Xbox One that annoys me (consoles are cheap and usually last a while unlike a decent gaming PC) but it's having to pay that for a mandatory Kinect which I do not want and also getting a lower performing console (compared to the PS4).

then in comes Virgin or others with a console to fill the gap!
  • I like having physical copies of games because technology can still fail, but i don't like feeling forced into buying download copies and not actually owning a game, just leasing it.
