Laptop screen going faulty

I've got an intermittent problem with the laptop screen where it starts flashing different patterns.

It started a couple of months ago. Usually it stops after a few seconds or minutes but I'm concerned it's going to get worse and go altogether.

Is it possible it can be fixed or is it likely to be a permanent problem? It's an Asus.

Many thanks

If it really is a hardware fault then it's probably not going to be economically viable to repair, as the graphics chipset typically isn't intended to be replaceable.

However, it's possible that it is a driver issue. Have you checked within Device Manager to see if you are using the latest graphics driver?

Give it a few squeezes in a few places, usually along the top of the keyboard, under the screen. This is where the graphics, plug and cabling usually are, and if you're able to either make this problem appear or go away by doing this, you could have a damaged motherboard, connector or cable. You could risk taking the laptop apart (there will be a guide on the net, search for 'Asus <model> disasseble' or similar) and see if you can how the screen is connected to the motherboard. There's often a power, and a a data cable, and it's the data one you're interested in. Unplug it and plug it back in, see if you can see if the cable is damaged. You may have just fixed it. If the cable is damaged, you can do a bit of work to replace it, maybe (but it's quite tricky), but if it's the motherboard, it's unlikely to be worth repairing - you don't mention the age.

what's the make and model of the laptop?

thought the graphics chip will be embedded on the motherboard you might be able to replace the heat transfer paste.

It sounds a bit like the chip might just be overheating.
it might just need a good clean out of the dust and fluff that gathers inside techy stuff ^_^

Thanks for all your help, very much appreciated.

It's an Asus X32A. I've just tweaked it as Almillar suggested and it seems to have stopped, for now at least.

Will see how I get on!

I've got through five months but it's getting much worse now and is hardly usable.

Worth taking to a local repair shop?

Whatever else you do to repair it, I suggest taking a full backup of the disk, now, while you can still (barely) use it.
