PPI offer letter from the bank

I'm sorry if this has already been discussed, please feel free to redirect me so as not to repeat yourselves (I know it's annoying!)
My question is two-fold...
Over a month, maybe two months ago, I contacted a PPI company filled in my forms and awaited a response. Whilst I was waiting I received a letter from my bank offering to investigate themselves whether or not I had been missold PPI. I waited to hear back from the PPI company and after 4 weeks of initially sending the forms I called them to see how they were getting on. They said they had received my forms and someone would be in contact with me by the following monday. A few weeks on from that I have another letter from the bank offering to investigate but now I cannot find any details for the PPI company.
So my questions are...
1) how legitimate is the contact from my bank to investigate my PPI? Are they likely to fob me off and not return my money. I know undoubtedly that I was missold.
2) I understand that some PPI companies still charge you even if you go on to claim yourselves. I remember that the letter said I could pull out of the claim and cancel at any time but I can't find the letter or even the name of the company so I'm not sure what to do!
Thank you for taking the time to read

1 - legitimate
2 - oops....you really need to find out who they were because if you don't, they will charge you even if they do nothing....Non me fac calcitrare tuum culi0 -

I quite agree... if I hadn't been able to find the information it would have been entirely my own fault and I would have taken that on the chin. Luckily I have dug out the letter and can call and chase them tomorrow. I'm considering cancelling my claim with them (as it does say on the letter I can cancel at any time) and responding to the letter sent directly by my bank... but I must admit it's really a bit daunting, I just terribly worried I'm going to write the wrong thing and screw it up.0

Go to this link and follow the simplified steps (after cancelling the CMC contract, of course)lisamegdaisyandblossom wrote: »I just terribly worried I'm going to write the wrong thing and screw it up.
