We bought a Petporte Smart Flap from Amazon last yr. Our cat wouldn't wear a collar and this recognises your cat's microchip. He hadnt used a cat flap before and with a little effort by us soon learnt what to do. We stood either side of the door with a treat - took approx 6 sessions for him to get the idea.
It can be programmed for up to 25 cats!! This gives our cat complete freedom to come and go while stopping other cats coming in. You can set it to only allow your cat out in the day if that's what you want.
My very helpful neighbour fitted it into my upvc back door and didn't seem to have a problem.
Just checked on Petporte website and they're expensive which is why we waited for a good deal on the web. Think it cost approx £50.
Cat seems much calmer now next door's cats are not coming in and we're not worried that his collar has caught on a branch and he's trapped.0 -
I have had the original Pet Porte Cat Flap for 5 years and have had nothing but trouble with the catches. The latest version is much smaller and so would leave a huge gap in uPVC door. With this in mind I bought an original, unused, one off eBay.
I installed this yesterday and it took me 3 hours, that's with a hole already cut remember. I had to remove the old one, clean off the old silicon, install the new one and resilicon it.
BTW if installing in a uPVC you need to use low modular external silicon.
I then programmed my cat in and the lock wouldn't work properly. This flap is very fiddly to install so I was not looking forward to dismantling it all to look at the catches. Anyway this morning I spent 2 1/2 hours removing the silicon, this time only from inside the door, fostering about with the catches and then resiliconing. I discovered that the catches weren't seated properly and once I'd adjusted them both catches worked perfectly. Once I reinstalled it, I once more ran it through all its various sequences and it it was brilliant. I was over the moon with it.
As soon as my cat came through it the lock catch failed. I could have cried and was so angry. The problem is a small fusewire thin spring. Read all the reviews, they all complain about the catches failing on the new version too.
Well I'll be damned if I'm going to go through all that palaver a third time. I'm going on the phone right now to order one from Sureflap.

I will need to order their Pet Door, which is larger than their cat flap, as the hole left by the original Pet Porte will be too large. This also comes at a price of £120, but reviewers offer nothing but praise for Sureflap's customer service. Their website has very helpful videos and installation is very much more simpler than Pet Porte's. Unfortunately I'm too late for their free next day delivery, but I'll get in on Friday and it'll be in by Saturday.1 -
I've just found a 'green jem' make, catflap, with 4 different settings, in and out, locked, in only, out only, and it cost £3.99 out of what used to be called poundstretcher, and is now called in store. Looks pretty much ok. Just basic but sturdy enough and with all the fixings and instructions. I have usually used wilko's (wilkinsons) own basic type. which are now about £7.0
