Tough luck?

I had to return something to the manufacturer for replacement, they told me to send it to a freepost address.

Because it wasn't all that big and worth about £20 I stuck it in a jiffy bag and put it in a post box.

Of course the manufacturer is saying they have not received my item and the post office are saying there is nothing they can do as I have no proof of posting.

So am I screwed?

Probably.

Unfortunately, as you've got no proof of posting or insurance, there's not really anything else you can do.

This is why I always use recorded post or even spend an extra quid to use the likes of MyHermes, maybe they have genuinely not received it, but some companies will try anything

Absolutely no point in getting recorded, big companies never sign for them anyway as they all come in sacks.

I learned this the hard way many years ago when posting a faulty phone back to O2. They claimed they didn't receive it, and that was that...

This crops up quite often. It does seem a bit unfair that customers are encouraged to use freepost (and most will for obvious reasons) only to find that when the item goes astray they have no cover. Yes it is obvious when you think about it, but often people don't think about it till it is too late.

With expensive items I always use special delivery even if I have a freepost envelope as it just is not worth the risk, and I'd rather pay the cost.

With less expensive items, though, does anyone know if you can still get a certificate of posting when using freepost?

Would you be able to claim from Royal Mail then if you pay for recorded and it isn't signed for? It comes with insurance.
I didn't know about companies not signing, I've only ever sent letters and they've always been signed for. I can see that it may be different for packets, though it shouldn't be.

If you had proof of postage and it wasn't recorded you'd still be able to make a claim
