Virgin travel insurance claim?

Hey Guys, I've just got back from our Honeymoon in Mexico, pretty much a disaster from start to finish... Although in the second week, i contracted some kind of virus from the all inclusive buffet (Gran Bahia Principe Tulum) I went to see a doctor in the town nearby originally as i didn't want to pay the resort doctor $105 for a consultation, the doctor in town charged me $10 and told me to drink lots of water & take imodium. This turned out to be the wrong diagnosis. Later in the week, the day before we're due to fly home, my symptoms got considerably worse so i bit the bullet & paid the $105 to see the resort doctor, he told me i need to go to hospital right away and he's so concerned he will even drive me there, it was 40 miles away...
I contacted virgin travel insurance en route, and they specifically told me, "Do not under any circumstances go to a private hospital, go to the public state hospital" I couldn't believe what i was hearing, I need to get to the hospital so they could rule out Appendicitis as i needed to fly home the next day. Following a heated exchange of words on the phone with them i hung up on them and went to a private hospital, where they did a load of tests, all in a short space of time. 2 hrs i was in there, bill came to $1039 USD. They ruled out Appendicitis, i have Gastrointestinal Flu (Typhoid Fever).
I'm now back home and just about to contact them to get the money back, is there anything i should know? I've done some Googling to see if there is any reason why they wouldn't want me to go private, the only reason i can think of is the cost? The reason i didn't want to go to the state hospital is because of the waiting time, my case wouldn't have been classed as an emergency to them and i would have been sat in a waiting room for 8 hours or more... Any help would be great..
Thanks ... G!

Expect a fight to get your money back.
Google is no use. What does your policy say about which hospital they will pay for? That's where to start.0
