You will always need more storage space than you think.

You will always need storage for longer than you think.

You may be better putting a match to your stuff now and buying new from the money you'd save from not using storage.

Oh, and if you do go-ahead... don't forget to take the batteries out of anything that goes into storage. It'll be ten years later before some of the things see the light of day again (our experience). Consider 'self-storage' as more of a time capsule, if you know what I mean...

Use sturdy boxes, not cheap ones. Cheap boxes start to slump and squash when they're 3 high. Buy a cheap metal set of shelving (or 2-3 of them) to be able to stack and access things more easily.

Hard without you saying what you're storing, but I didn't store any furniture and I kept everything in small boxes as larger boxes are harder to lift/carry.

Ha ha I agree with what WellKnownSid said!
If you will be storing for a while try to get a deal. There is usually a free month to be had.
In hindsight I wish I had got rid of items rather than paying to store them - could have saved my money and bought new in the end!

Buy your own good padlock before hand as the storage company rely on a captive market to sell average padlocks for circa £15

Is this for short term with plans to take it out on a set date?

If you are storing because you might think it will come in handy then dont , trust me it will stay there for a long time , you will take it out of store , wonder why you kept such carp and bin it

and be loads of money out of pocket

I own a storage company ( not self store ) we have had people store stuff for up to 10 years ! ....the record holder is still with us after 20 years lol .I have seen people empty their storage and throw it straight out and if you add up how much it costs you would cry . And self store is more expensive

And no , when people dont pay their bills we do not find hidden treasure as they do in storage wars , its just carp:rotfl:

Whilst insurance is a stipulation of all storage companies, you dont HAVE to use theirs. Look online for your own policy and secure it. You need only show your document to the storage company for it to be valid despite what they tell you.

Buy a padlock from B&Q - its cheaper than theirs

Remember where you parked your stuff....I wrote down our storage cupboard number

Look carefully at your stuff and decide whether you actually want to store this stuff. I cleaned out our locker about 6 months ago which had moved 3 times around the country in 6 years - you know what? What we kept out of that 1/4 garage locker fitted in the back of a fiat, I kid you not. The rest ended up at the dump. What a waste of money!
Debt Free! Long road, but we did it

May be a bit late if you've already chosen a self storage site, but I would make sure the access time suits you.

I self stored between my last house moves and the place I used closed at 6pm everyday. This was massively inconvenient as it was a rush if I wanted to go there after work. I believe some of them are 24 hours.

Top tip: Don't store yourself past your sell by date, or no one will want you! ;)

Be very, very selective about what you decide to store.

Give yourself a time scale to get it out and if you don't meet it review what you have in store.

    Factor in the VAT

Really think if your. 'stuff' is worth storing.

Check with family and friends to see if you can use their loft or garage.

If you things are not too valuable see if you can rent a garage space.

Work out the cost to you over 6 months, a year, two years, it really concentrates the mind.

You can get cheaper storage if you don't want to access your stuff.

Check out how many units they have empty. The company I stored with went in to administration and I was given 2 weeks to remove everything!

As others have said, check if you really want to keep what you're storing.
