Window tinting question.

Hi all,

At the moment i have these temporary roll on/off window tint things and my toddlers travel much better on sunny days when these are in use, but they dont cover the full windows and they sometimes sit and pick at the edges :D

Due to this im thinking about getting both of my cars windows tinted permanantly but have a couple of questions.

Firstly the front windows. Am i correct in thinking that the fronts (not windscreen) can be tinted but only to a certain limit as the have to allow a certain percentage of light through?
One company i contated said yes the other said no. I just think it would look strange if the fronts arent at least slightly tinted so they "match" a little.

Secondly, one of the cars has one of them rectangular reversing aid lens things stuck to the rear window. It was on when we got it and is about as much use as a chocolate fire guard. Doesnt make much of a difference and is in completely the wrong place anyway.
Any tips on how to remove this without damaging the rear window demister? I was thinking hair dryer and patience.

Cheers, Mark

https://www.gov.uk/tinted-vehicle-window-rules gives information about the law on tinted windows.
We just did one of our side windows this morning in a light smoke colour.Didnt want it too dark as its only to keep sun off my kid.
Bought a roll off ebay for £12 for 6metres.Bit of a pain to do but looks good if u can get it right.
Only got one window done as you cant put it on in direct sunlight as it dries too quick so will do the other window later.

On most modern cars the front windows are tinted to around the max legal limit anyway. About time some of these cowboy tinting companies got nicked !!

As for the parking aid, probably best to park it facing the sun and allow to really warm up and it should hopefully peel off.

This! Do not tint the fronts unless you are sure they can be kept legal, you run the risk of annoying plod. They need to let 70% of the light in and as molerat rightly points out, most are at the limit as standard. Roll the window down a bit, you'll see the difference in colour

What's wrong with a nice Whinnie the Pooh stick on shade or something? Just wondering because, Britain being Britain it is a lot of expense to go to for the few sunny days we actually get and this is MSE after all.
What if there was no such thing as a rhetorical question?

The front windows will already be tinted to the legal maximum.

The places that will tint the front windows for you may possibly chuck them in for free or forget to add it to the invoice because they know its not legal.

I would advise you to get rid of that "parking aid" asap. My old man had one on his Peugeot Partner Combi thing and when going to the NEC down the 70MPH collector road from castle Brom with the rear screen heating on, the thing shorted and shattered the entire rear window. To save my dad missing the entire exhibition he was going to i went down and sat with the car while waiting for auto windscreens to come and do their stuff, the technician said they have to change so many rear windows shattered for these things, needless to say my dad has never replaced it...

As said above, if you do add window tints dont forget to call your insurance company and add it as a modification.
Infact, call them first and check they will allow it and at what cost

Hope this story is from a few years ago, the Collector road has been 50 mph since 2004 ;)
