Car Insurance - New 55yr driver - license for 26 years

I have held a driving license for 26 years but have never actually driven since I passed my test. Now at age 55 mobility issues mean that I need to buy a car and start driving. Is there anybody out there who has been in a similar postion and can offer any advice on insuance? I did try getting a dummy quote on confused.com for a ford fiesta and the quote was £429. This did not seem right as surely I am now a much higher risk than a 17 year old who has just passed their test.

In real life then you would be higher risk than a normal 55 but probably not as much as a 17 year old unless your a silver racer rather than boy racer and will want to do handbreak turns to impress all the girls in the retirement home?
There are millions of questions that insurers could ask to refine the premiums they charge however testing shows that the more questions you ask the more likely people are to abandon the process and so insurers balance both variance of answers against effect on premium and effect on drop off rates and effectively short list the questions to the key ones that have the biggest drivers. What your recent history has been is not one of them.
Just be thankful your premium is £429 rather than £4,2900 -
From the questions they've asked you, you fit into a lower risk group than a newly-qualified driver. In reality? Yes, you're probably higher risk.
My advice - take the quote, maybe brag about it to younger relatives, but before driving, take some refresher lessons.0 -
One 60 year old driver was arrested/fined? in the clampdown on boy racers in Birmingham a little while back. Police had been filming them race for a while.
Insurance rarely makes sense though. Add my sister who has made several claims to my claim free policy and its cheaper?
How? She is high risk and her premium is mental.
The only reason i dont add her is she will want to drive my car and most likely bump it.Censorship Reigns Supreme in Troll City...0 -
Many thanks for your replies. I will most certainly take a refresher course. I guess I was a liitle worried my insurance would somehow be invalid because I had not pointed out that I had no driving experience whatsoever.0

all you need to do is answer the questions they ask, if you start volunteering information they haven't asked for it just confuses the poor souls (and normally ends up costing you extra)
In your case....licence held for 26 years, zero NCB & none claims or convictions0 -

I think most 17 year olds would be over the moon the get a quote of £429....most will get between 5x and 10x that amount so you are much lower risk0
