That wasn't my logic. I suggest you read again.
I was simply saying some won't be able to due to the costs, which would have been the same for us years ago, hence we went in term time without much of a fuss. I remember and cherish those holidays as they were the only real time I remember spending with my dad (such as as I said, fishing in a pond). But things are magical in those years. A pond isn't just a pond, it's the gateway to a catching the biggest fish alive. And that's what i remember.
I don't remember maths at primary school at all.
Though it has to be said, I can't spell or use grammar, neither can I fish. I've got a happy memory that will live forever with me though
Certainly, speaking now, wouldn't have been able to create those memories in school holidays, the holiday itself would have been unaffordable, so the holiday wouldn't have existed.0 -

I guess it depends on the value you place on your children's education and whether you think a cheaper holiday is more important than the disruption to their education?
I learnt a lot in those weeks with my dad. Even the sitting silence fishing taught me patience.0 -

What a lovely story, thanks for sharing it with us.0 -
Maybe we should have a thread to find "the cheapest caravan/park home holiday in England available starting in the month of August 2013".
They're not all expensive, it's just the minute you mention a caravan holiday people then want kids clubs, pools, entertainment, all inclusive, a house not a caravan, with spare bedrooms, right on the beach, with free booze, and a club ... and .... and ..... and then moan it's £2500.
£300/week in July/August. http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Holiday-caravan-in-Pembrokeshire-Wales-Last-minute-deal-ring-and-ask-/151059539409?pt=UK_Tickets_Travel_Accommodation_ET0 -

The owners want £5 per person per night for this...
That's a bit cheap if you ask me.
I'd want at least £40 a night if they wanted me to stay in that.0 -

One holiday I do remember with my parents was on a caravan sitedown in Brixham. The site could only provide one of their vans for a week, but we managed to pick up an owner let out of our local paper, on the same site to make up two weeks.
Can't remember which way round we stopped in them but the site owned van was top notch the other was a disgrace. We had paid up front but one we got home dad convinced the owner to cough up a sizeable refund.
Statics have come on leaps and bounds since then, electricity, flush loos, hot running water - in those days it was off with a two tone water pail and a run over the damp field to the toilet block."If you act like an illiterate man, your learning will never stop... Being uneducated, you have no fear of the future.".....

So lets just take Haven holidays as an example, in Wales., in October (term time) for 4 nights = £239.
Same place, same caravn, in Wales, in September (school holidays) for 4 nights = £719
This is why we used to go in term time (I guess!). If we didn't go in term time, we'd never have gone.
Two options.- Take holidays once every three occasions
- Take holidays in Scotland where the term time is different and the rates may be different
Your parent may have sacrificed some valuable learning opportunities during those "in term" holidays.:wall:
What we've got here is....... failure to communicate.

I'm not saying your parents did this but some parents won't downgrade their holiday expectations because of school holidays i.e. they can afford a decent enough holiday in school holidays but prefer to go on a cruise in February instead.
I think if the real choice is a weeks holiday in term time or no holiday then I'd be taking the holiday. There's a balance - if the child has missed time due to illness or is struggling academically then probably they should go to school.
What's wrong with camping nearby or Sun weekends though? My kids have become fairly well travelled as we got better off but some of the best times have been the cheapest and most unexpected. Seeing a one legged pigeon in Cornwall staying at the MIL's is one of their holiday highlights.0 -

Nothing wrong with any of that.
Though I personally take offence to having to carry out basic human functions in a bucket in the middle of a field!
I go on the sun holidays myself. Good value, especialy for the little ones with the entertainment etc.0
