G8 chaos on Monday morning

  • Been a bit of an anti-climax in all fairness. Only 1500 turn out to a "BIG" G8 Rally in Belfast. Even a free concert in Botanic Gardens in Belfast, with some great bands inc. 2 Door Cinema Club, could only attract about 1500 people.... apparently over 5000 tickets were issued for it and only 1500 turn up !! terrible really, I'd wanted to go but couldn't get a ticket as all had been issued out.......
Way things are going they could be back here next time round too.... absolutely no real protesting at all (So Far !!)

I was really angry about that.

It wasn't advertised, so a few people in the know must have snapped up loads of tickets each. Hundreds of people, myself included, thought until it was too late that you could have got in at the gate on the day.

Have heard this repeated a lot, business worth millions but where is it coming from and going to?A lot of self important people fly in and prevent mere mortals going about their normal day, block roads ,delay flights,so where comes the millions from? Usual answer is tourism but I doubt people will flock here because obama did.If you take out the cost of security I think it will cost this little place a lot more than we benefit....

Well said. We all hope that there will be a benefit to tourism in Fermanagh but the upfront cost of 'hosting' this event is considerable in terms of hassle and lost business.

Enniskillen was chosen as a suitably out of the way place in which the event could be held with minimal hassle from protesters - not because anyone really wanted to do NI a favour or thought that it was a super place. And there will be next to no input in what is going on there from locals, it's a global roadshow with the only local participation being to provide a massive amount of background security.

The only real action on Saturday it seems is when the 10 or so Fleg protesters started heckling and singing the sash.:rotfl:

The police moved in pretty quick, three rows of them it seems.:D

World poverty be damned. If you're going to protest it has to be about serious matters such as taking a fleg off of a building.

Belfast was so quiet this past weekend - local businesses certainly didn't get a boom with all the scaremongering about protests!
    Always overestimating...

So thats it over, no riots or major protests. Just 8000 police on overtime and a U.S WW2 bomb?

Bit of a damp squib by all accounts. Pleased to see none of the 'groups' over here tried to make a name for themselves and for once our wee country came out looking good on the world stage.
