Ceiling paper coming off. Any tips?

My ceiling paper appears to be coming off, previously it had artecs which I wanted to get removed. Any ideas or tips to ensure the paper sticks on the wall?

I have used 'Size' on the ceiling and left it on for a few days but the paste seems to expand and doesn't stick on the wall. Not sure what would be causing it to come off. One side of the celing is fine its the other half giving problems or more or less the centre part of the room.

Sorry darkcloudi, I cant make out what you are actually asking.

Are you saying you have papered over Artex, or the artex has been removed and you have sanded it etc prior to papering?

Artex has been completly removed and sanded down so that you can see the plaster on the ceiling.

I only have problems on one side of the room as the paper appears to be coming down on this section only.

Also another question is can you paper over artex as I got one bedroom that has this dreadful stuff on the ceiling and from having a difficult time taking it off in the living room i'm hoping to just paper over it.

Hi darkcloudi, no, you cant paper over Artex, you have done the right thing by getting it off on the previous room.
I cant think what could be the problem as you have taken the Artex off and its down to the bare plaster, and you did right by sizing it with paste beforehand.
But it makes you wonder why it has only happened on one part of the ceiling:confused: .

Is there any way you can remove the paper of the bad bit, and take it off to the good bit of paper that is sticking quite well?, and re-do it?

perhaps you missed a bit when you were pasting, it should have stuck, as why is the other part holding the paper.
Obviously the ceiling is the same all over, so it cant be the ceiling, as its only hapened in that one area.
Is there any chance of you showing some pics?

I have never seen this type of thing before, admittidly I have had the odd bit of paper that hasnt stuck on the ceiling, but cause I am in the room I can see why and put it right, and I can normally solve these things if I am there,(hruumm if need be) ;) but its difficult to give you the proper advice unless I can actually see the problem.
  • I would suggest using a border adhesive. If the paper has been damaged/stretched in any way then cut it off before reattaching it. For an invisible join, cut the paper in a wavy line as you remove it, then put a layer of paint over the whole ceiling no one will notice. I did this when a corner of the paper on a ceiling started to hang down and I didn't even see where it had been cut once the job was done.

Thanks misgrace. When I get home I will try to get some pictures, this won't be till friday as I work away from home.

FirstClassMale as the ceiling paper was coming off I got rid of all the paper that was coming off and bought a new role which I still need to put on. When I get back home I will try to get some pictures of the ceiling.

As requested pictures can be found here: http://schilwan.pwp.blueyonder.co.uk/

You will see Pic 1 has the paper by the window and the section where the paste is peeling. Pic 2 shows the right hand side of the wall with paper still on ceiling. Pic 3 and 4 show the paste which is peeling off the ceiling.

I used size to make the ceiling ready without putting paper on and pic 3 and 4 shows the results of what has happened.

I still got to put the paper on the ceiling. I haven't retried a second attempt since the first attempt the paper came off the ceiling. Hoping for some advise on what may be causing the paste to peel like the pics shown.

Hi DC, what a flippen mess, it must have been a nightmare for you.

Can you explain to me pic 3.....

Is that pic taken after you took the paper off?
and if so, what is the flakynessand peeling underneath, it cant be the paper can it?, it must be the orginal paint surely?

If it is the orginal paint flaking, I can tell you how to fix this before you paper, as I have come across this, sorted it out and papered, and its been fine.

If it is the old paint peeling, dont worry, but dont attempt to paper it until you get back to me, and I will tell you what to do, and I guarentee your paper will stick, but thats only if pic 3 and pic 4 is the old paint peeling off, and also you must repair that crack also before you paper over it.:D

Pic 3 is the Size ( the actual paste that is peeling from the ceiling :( ) What I did was put ceiling paper on which came off so I was told to take the entire paper off the ceiling and just prep the ceiling by putting size and after 1 week pic 3 is the result of what happened. The paste seems to not stay on the wall. Is this usual?

Would you recommend paint the ceiling and then paper over the paint?

The crack is there cause the person who plastered over the plasterboards did not put scrim on the joins :(

Thanks for the info DC, it looked like the paint underneath had flaked off.

Ok, so now I know its defantely the paste, and obvously the paste is reacting to some parts of your ceiling.
So lets say, there is something in that part of plaster that is not working with your paste, as its defiantely your not your paste, as the other side is holding up.
Right then, Firstly i would try and repair the crack, as you will have the paper up a couple of months and the crack will get worse and show thru your paper.
You can either scrim it yourself, or just cut the crack out and fill it.

So now you have sorted the crack out, and you are ready to paper, here is what I would do.

Before you even attempt to paper, I would rub that part of the ceiling down, then wash down with 'sugar soap' which you buy from any DIY stores, this will get rid of any contamination caused by the paste or plaster reacting to each other.
When dry, either undercoat that area with oilbased undercoat, leave to dry, then paper as normal.

I would suggest that you could PVA that area if the plaster is old plaster, but if its a new plaster dont even go there, but if its old plaster, and you did PVA it after you have sugar soaped it, either the oilbase undercoat or the PVA will seal that area and your paper will hold.

If you use either the U/C or the PVA as a protection, there will be no need to size the ceiling again, just soak your lengths for the reuired time and paper..

Please get back to me and let me know the results.:D
