Claim has more than doubled car insurance renewal

Please can anyone tell me why there is such a huge difference in car insurance premiums? We had to make a substantial claim on the policy for my car earlier this year. The renewal has come through and the premium has more than doubled year-on-year. I have asked the insurance company which insures our other car to quote, and that has come in at less than the current insurer charged us last year!
Of course we are tempted to put both the cars with the second insurer, but will we be penalized for this in some way?
Any advice gratefully received.

Generally you do get a better deal going for a new policy rather than renewing.
And your claim will inevitably mean a hike in premium, made worse by the loss of NCD if unprotected.
You really ought to always shop around at renewal for the best deal (though best isn't always the cheapest!)
If you are insured on the other car you need to tell them about your claim, and did you disclose the claim when getting this cheap quote from them?
There will be no "penalty" for giving the same insurer another car to cover, and (assuming they are prepared to cover it) they may give you extra discount for insuring 2 cars with them.0

Sounds like you have discovered the 50 or 100% "loyal customer tax" renewals often include these days0
