Anyone live on the Western Isles?

The in-laws live on Islay. Prices over there are high, much higher than the mainland for everything from groceries to fuel (for car and for heating). It is very expensive for them to visit us, and for us to go and see them! The ferry doesn't run in bad weather. On the plus side, it is beautiful there!

I spent 4 weeks working on South Uist and loved it. It was a totally different way of life. We had no mobile phone signal (that was in 2000), which I didn't mind at all. The locals were all really friendly, but that may have been because they knew we were just there for a month. Be aware of a lack of trees. That took a bit of getting used to! Everyone seemed to leave their doors unlocked, and the only danger was someone popping in to see you and helping themselves to a glass of something if you weren't in!
The scenery is absolutely beautiful. The weather is very changable.
I want to go back now and have a beer in the Polochar for old time's sake.
