... UK immigration law.

For those of you who know me from Discussion Time (DT) and the Money Savers Arms (MSA), my wife is Russian and she had to go back home for a few years to cre for her grandmother who was very ill (and sadly died last year).

She now wants to return home and, because her settlement has expired, we need to re-apply for it (according to the British Embassy).

However, I'd like to hire a solicitor to help because I want to get the application right first time.

So, since we live in Coventry, I was wondering if any of my fellow MSErs have any recommendations for solicitors who cover UK immigration law?

If CAB can't help, I'd give the Coventry Refugee and Migrant Centre a call. I wouldn't expect them to be able to help you directly, as they say immigration work is chargeable and must be paid for in advance, but they probably know which solicitors have expertise in this area.

I have just had a look at the Law Society the logical place to go other than CAB and there is a list of about 100 Firms.
You want a Solicitor with LEXCEL accredition as this means they meet the qualifying standard for such work.

Thanks for all the replies so far: I know there's one firm near Coventry station who specialise in UK immigration law, but from their web site I'm a little concerned as the majority of their clients are originally from places like Nigeria or Zimbabwe...

But how many Russian clients is any immigration lawyer likely to have compared to Nigeria and Zimbabwe? What exactly is the concern?

Obviously if there's a Russian expat community around Coventry, you could pick their brains too, but I honestly don't know how many significant clusters of Russian expats we might have in the UK.

Personally I would go for a LEXCEL Qualified Solicitor rather than worry too much about the clientele?

Nigeria is, imo, one of the most corrupt states in Africa and Zimbabwe has Robert Mugabe running it, that's why.

And there's no corruption in Russia?

Seriously, you're looking for a UK based solicitor. I'm not saying there are no dodgy UK solicitors, I'm just thinking you can't judge their capability by their client group ... after all, most of them will have a fair few criminals on their books, unless they don't do ANY criminal work!

There must be some Solicitors website like the Legal 500 for Solicitors?

    http://http://www.legal500.com/
I believe covers Soliticitors. Your best bet is searching here and judging a Brief on Qaulity, Qualifications, Experience than worry too much about the clientele which might not help your decision making process.
You expect Immigration Law Practices to let in Immigrants. Other seemingly unsavoury aspects of Legal work you might not endorse but is nonetheless successful provided of course the plaintiff? has a Case. As all Cases depend on whether they are meritorious in order to take it a stage further.
