Hi all,
I am in a tricky situation. I am desperately looking for someone to remove a load bearing wall in my house.

My bathroom fitter said he has a team and he can get someone to install steel and remove the wall for me. I am not very confident of this approach really

Another option I have is a builder I found via ratedpeople. He has no reviews there and his company has no trace on the Internet except ads in local classifieds. I asked him for a reference. He said he did a similar job for someone in my area and emailed me a name and number. I googled this reference and found that he is a builder! Why will a builder hire another builder for removing a wall? The good thing about this guy is that he said he will do this work on the weekend for me. So I can be on site and see exactly what he is doing.

Shall I take a chance and go ahead with him? Am I being unnecessarily paraniod? Will I be able to minimize the risk if I am on site when they are doing the job?

Can someone please advise ? I need to finalize today!

To clarify, I have structural calcs from an engineer and I submitted my application to the council. I've made a tentative appointment next week with the officer from building control to inspect.

Go ahead and take a chance if you'd be happy for the whole bloody lot to come down!

No, you are not being unnecessarily paranoid. Consult a structural engineer and then ask them for a recommendation for a trusted builder.

... and make sure you submit plans and structural calculations to building control and notify them prior to work starting. They will want to inspect the beam once installed and prior to plastering etc.

He didn't, it's his friend providing a reference without work having ever taken place because friends help friends.

In which case, just go with the bathroom fitter's "team". He has the most vested interest in getting it right, ie if it isnt right he cant start the bathroom. Building control inspector will make sure it is installed correctly.

"Load bearing wall" sounds scary but it is not rocket science.

He is already doing the bathroom work. He said he has £1m insurance, but I doubt it will cover the wall removal work...since he is a bathroom fitter - not a builder?

It probably will. Ask to see his cover details.
  • Or just talk to a structural engineer who can recommend someone reliable that does this kind of thing all the time rather than someone that fits toilets.

Even if someone did have insurance, I'd not like to risk my life and the lives of my family in the house at the time if it did give way.

Am I missing something? Why the rush to find someone? what's the deadline?

Get a recommendation as everyone else said. If you live in a block of terraces, you could even knock on your neighbours' doors and ask them if they've had it done and who did it

    too many comps..not enough time!
