Child Genius

  • I think the term 'gifted' is wrong and shouldn't be used to describe children.

All children are special and unique and have different abilities in different areas, describing them as such is putting them on a pedestal in life that they will find hard to shift and could cause them more harm than good in the future.

My son's school uses the terms able, more able and very able as the Head doesn't believe in the term G&T.

I didn't mind Hugo so much until he got bored in the card room, started playing up, distracted the whole group and caused that lovely little girl to burst into tears, forget her cards and be kicked out of the competition.

I also agree with the parents though, who seemed very worried that as he surfed through it with little or no studying, he will grow up thinking nothing in life requires work. Chances are he's bright enough it won't, but it's a bad ethic to have later in life.

I think to really find out which of the children is the brightest you need to take the parents involvement away. All credit to Hugo's parents for letting him do as he wished over the holidays and not force him to study. One of parents told their child to just memorise 30 of the cards - this was a very good tactic enough cards to get through but it takes the pressure off trying to remember all of them. But the child did not come up with this idea himself, left to his own devices he might have got confused and stressed trying to remember all 52 and not done so well.

Hugo on the other hand worked this out for himself he knew he had done well in the previous round and he only needed to do a little to get through. Whilst his disruption was unacceptable I do not blame him, I blame who ever made the decision to leave a group of kids (as they all are still kids) alone in a room to study with no adult present.

So failing children are seen as 'able'? Amazing. The real world is going to be quite the shock.

No they get placed in a different category, average for age is classed as able.

I also like Hugo. For those that saw last weeks, I think it was pretty awful how his mother described him as irritating right in front of his face.

He can be a little terror but his mum and dad just wore a look of 'he does our head in' all the way through. He's bound to behave badly and attention seek. I rooted for him this week and was pleased to see how well he did. The cards thing did amuse me I'm afraid to say.

Oscar as well...what a little sweetheart!

I do like the programme but I think there's encouragement and there's being outright pushy. I thought the chess players mum was the worst. I'd love to ask her how many competitions she enters !

Totally disliked Hugo and Leo. Found them utterly odious on screen (although credit where credit's due regarding Hugo's parents not making him study for the general knowledge round). I do feel that no matter how clever a child is being they ought to be told when they're being rude and obnoxious and I never saw that happening with Hugo.

Like Oscar though...think he is great and am interested to see what else he will go on to do.
