Just out of interest. I paid via paypal but my money were taken from a debit card (visa) which is linked to paypal. Would visa card chargeback rule apply to me?

No, because you weren't paying the seller directly, you were paying PayPal to pay the seller.

Does the Paypal and chargeback section in the link below offer a slight hope if the Paypal account was empty?

It still doesn't change the fact that the purpose of the transaction was to pay PayPal, not the seller. And if it was paid on debit card there is no legal right to chargeback, only one operated essentially out of goodwill by Visa and the issuing bank. Whether you can "match up" the payments is irrelevant - PayPal have discharged their duty correctly so they have no case to answer under the chargeback scheme.

So a very slight hope then. :)

Extremely slight. You'd have to rely on everyone who deals with the chargeback at the issuing bank being hopelessly incompetent enough to completely ignore the transaction itself and raise a chargeback anyway.

Sorry but you are wrong here.
Chargebacks can be actioned against paypal. BUT they can reject on the basis that all they do is move the money.
    Although they rarely do

In the Op's case though there would be no chargeback right as there is no proof of return. Which is part of faulty goods chargeback.

I remember asking Paypal about chargebacks a year or so ago, they said that a chargeback actioned against them would cause them to investigate it with the seller and may result in the sellers account being debited if the chargeback was successful (end result being decided by the bank or card issuer).
